Strategic Defense Company Status
In 2008, Brazil’s National Defense Strategy was set forth under Decree No. 6,703, aiming to modernize the Brazilian Armed Forces and strengthen national security. A key component of this strategy is the accreditation of Strategic Defense Companies—private enterprises that play a critical role in advancing Brazil’s defense capabilities through technology.
With companies like Embraer, Avibras, and AEL Sistemas also holding this designation, BNPETRO’s status underscores its alignment with the Ministry of Defense’s goals. This designation, backed by Law No. 12,598 of 2012, provides support for these companies, ensuring their technological contributions are directed toward the country’s defense framework.
After a rigorous evaluation, BNPETRO achieved its designation, as formalized by Ordinance No. 1,583/GM-MD on April 16, 2020, and published in Brazil’s official journal on April 23, 2020. This designation affirms BNPETRO’s role in national security, positioning its waste-to-fuel technology as essential to Brazil’s defense objectives.
Under this designation, Brazil’s federal government and military institutions actively oversee the application of BNPETRO’s technology, ensuring it meets national security standards and supports ongoing defense innovation.
